On the site of Ittenwiller, a kilometre to the west of Saint-Pierre, there was in Roman times a potters’ workshop, one of the first sites in Alsace. Remains of that time have been found on the site. In 1115, Canon Conrad founded an Augustinian priory next to a chapel. In 1661, the Bishop of Strasbourg restored the buildings, which had fallen in ruins. The enclosure of the former priory today includes a section of fortified wall with loopholes, moats with bridges and entrances, a dwelling, working buildings, a vegetable garden, a park and an orchard. The Castle is inhabited.
