Walking in autumn landscapes

We can't guarantee it every time, but it's usually during the first two weeks of October that autumn is at its most intense at altitude. We'd almost bet on the second weekend of the month (but that's yet to be proven!).
For hiking enthusiasts, our favorite is the 4 Lakes hike. A must-do every season to discover the typical landscapes of our mountains, but when autumn sets in, it's much more than a classic hike. It's the place to be to witness a life-size spectacle. Every kilometer is a trip across the Atlantic. The flamboyant scenery around each lake will leave you speechless!

Contemplating the sea of clouds

If the plain is shrouded in thick fog, and you can make out a faint glimmer of light behind it as you try to break through, consider climbing to higher altitudes. It's highly likely that at over 1,000m you'll be projected above the clouds. This is when a cottony bed floods the valleys, the low ceiling turns electric blue and the air is warmed by the sun's new-found rays. A breathtaking spectacle offered by nature, particularly in autumn and winter.

The most beautiful spots to observe this enchanting scene:

From the crest of Lac Blanc, you can easily contemplate this enchanting scene.

The plus: easy access. From the Col du Calvaire parking lot, it's just a fifteen-minute walk to the spot.

From the top of the Gazon du Faing, at 1306m above sea level, with a view of the Munster valley bathed in the sea, from which only the highest peaks of the massif, the Hohneck and the Grand Ballon, can be seen.
Bonus: if all the conditions are right, you can clearly see the Bernese Alps in the background.

Admire a sunrise/sunset

When the days are getting shorter, the mind is rested from the summer vacations and our rhythm is shifting to gently prepare for winter, we like to enjoy a few more sunrises/sunsets. Autumn sunrises have a special flavor. Neither too early nor too late, they're a perfect fit for everyday life. With the softer light, the extraordinary contrasts in the surrounding landscape and the new-found calm on the trails, it's the ideal time to admire the finest performances of the day's star.

The spot for a sunrise: on the crest of Lac Blanc. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the clear view. As the climb takes place at dawn, so that you're already there when the sky breaks through, you'll need a flashlight for the walk. Keep quiet, as chamois are usually on the trails at this time of day.

The spot for a sunset: from the Hautes Chaumes in the Tanet-Gazon du Faing Nature Reserve. The heather moor transforms into a remarkable golden carpet.
